How GM and Perdue Farms assist keep the lamps on

General Motors and poultry provider Perdue Farms Inc. today have something in common: They are both having paid to use less power.

They are among the customers regarding demand-response suppliers just who won agreements this month with the operator of America’s greatest energy program. In 2018, grid manager PJM Interconnection LLC will call on them to ratchet down their electricity demand when it is necessary to maintain the lamps on across its area in the eastern U.S.

Often, these demand-response providers get paid a regular rate of at least $149.98 a megawatt, the same as a traditional power generators. It is the most that PJM’s electricity providers will gather for capability in eight years and a surprising benefit for demand-side organizations like EnerNOC Inc. whose customers include GM and Perdue Farms. They walked from an market before this month with agreements representing 11,084 megawatts of PJM’s power supply, a 1 % obtain in market share.

Demand response suppliers were expected to be losers in last week’s public sale effects. Experts including UBS projected a drop in their participation because of stricter guidelines and also a case prior to the U.S. Supreme Court that questions whether or not they should be treated just like power generators.

Alternatively, they’ll account for almost 7 percent of PJM’s power supply back in beginning June 2018.

The rise in demand response agreements “was a big surprise vs. our thinking,” Julien Dumoulin-Smith, an analyst for UBS, said in a note to clients on Monday. Boston-based EnerNOC said it was excited to see the service’s share gain.

“We have said previously that we intend to maintain a portfolio of around 3,000-3,500 megawatts in PJM,” EnerNOC spokeswoman Robin Deliso said by e-mail. “This year’s results are in line with that method.”

GM provides demand reaction using a foundry and factory in Ohio to lower its own electricity bills, Sharon Basel, a business spokeswoman in Detroit, said by cell phone Tuesday. “When presented with that chance,” she said, “our plant authority leaped on the concept.”
